Prostitution

Prostitution is the practice of engaging in sexual relations in exchange for payment or some other benefits. It is sometimes described as commercial sex, A person who works in this field is called a prostitute and is a kind of sex worker. It is one of the branches of the sex industry operated in Thailand, Singapore, and other countries.

The legal status of prostitution varies from country to country. Sociological literature shows that annual revenue generated by prostitution worldwide to be over $100 billion.

It occurs in a variety of forms. Brothels are establishments specifically dedicated to it. In escort prostitution, the act may take place at the client’s residence or hotel room (referred to as out-call), or at the escort’s residence or a hotel room rented for the occasion by the escort (in-call). Another form is street prostitution.

Although the majority of prostitutes are female with male clients, there are also gay male prostitutes, lesbian prostitutes, and heterosexual male prostitutes. Newspapers project sometimes those illegal prostitutes happen in Thamel, Bus Park area and slum areas as well but sociological intensive research has not been carried out yet academically hence, there should be academic research towards this social issue.

The underlying societal factors behind prostitution are connected with

  • women’s poverty,
  • the weakness of the social security system,
  • problems with propiska (residence permits),
  • and unemployment.

At the individual level, the women’s experiences were connected with divorce, motherhood, and personal relationships.

The social effects of prostitution are as follows:

The physical, emotional, and psychological consequences of it can be profound and include rape and sexual assault, depression, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, self-harm, and suicide.
