In the human context, the social group is \u2013 \u201cAny collection of human beings who are brought into social relationships with one another\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Definitions from sociologists:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c A social group is a number of persons two or more, who have some common objects of attention, who are stimulating to each other, who have common loyalty and participate in similar activities\u201d. (Bogardus)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhenever two or more individuals come together and influence one another, they may be said to constitute a social group\u201d. (Ogburn &amp; Nimkoff)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Characteristics of social groups\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reciprocal relationships<\/li>\n<li>Sense of unity and feeling of sympathy towards each other.<\/li>\n<li>We- feeling: Members defend their interests collectively.<\/li>\n<li>Common interests and ideals<\/li>\n<li>Similar behavior: for achieving the common goals and interests.<\/li>\n<li>Group norms: Every group has its own set of rules and norms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Functions of Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Defining boundaries<\/li>\n<li>Choosing leaders<\/li>\n<li>Making decisions<\/li>\n<li>Setting goals<\/li>\n<li>Assigning tasks<\/li>\n<li>Controlling members behavior<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Types of group<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>According to the nature of social ties<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Primary group (family, neighbor)<\/li>\n<li>Secondary group<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>According to social identification<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In-groups<\/li>\n<li>Out-groups<\/li>\n<li>Reference group<\/li>\n<li>According to the organization<\/li>\n<li>Formal organization<\/li>\n<li>Informal organization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Primary Group<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The primary group is small in size and characterized by the personal, intimate and non-specialized relationship between their members.<\/li>\n<li>E . g. Family, Basketball team, A couple, Football team, classmates, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Elements of the primary group<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tend to be small and ordinarily composed of fewer than 15 to 20 individuals.<\/li>\n<li>Interaction and communication among members are of intimate and personal nature.<\/li>\n<li>Members commonly develop strong emotional bonds with other members.<\/li>\n<li>Generally persist over an extensive period of time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Secondary Group<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Secondary groups refer to a formal, impersonal group in which there is little social intimacy or mutual understanding.<\/li>\n<li>The relationship between the members is very superficial and there is only an indirect extension of influence amongst them.<\/li>\n<li>The groups which provide experience lacking in intimacy are called secondary groups.
